| Much has been made about the sonic deficiencies of the Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 3 recording. Microphone placement of the live Carnegie Hall recording was quite close. This resulted in a dry sound without much concert hall ambiance. It also contributed to some moderate "spotlighting" (unbalanced highlighting) of individual orchestra instrument solos. These things are true. But there are always problems with recordings of live performances in a concert hall. And, as an acquaintance of mine put it: "Maybe we don’t hear what the audience heard, but we do hear what the conductor heard!"
