| xThe trumpeter Andre Schoch, member of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2017, releases his first solo album with a sophisticated repertoire of baroque and early classic trumpet concerts by Michael Haydn, Johann Wilhelm Hertel, Johann Melchior Molter, Leopold Mozart on 17.11.2023 on the label ES-DUR Georg Philipp Telemann, recorded with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The title of this illustrious compilation, ‘CORE’, represents the innermost, soul and heart of this special music that has accompanied Andre Schoch for a long time. On the one hand, it is about the “core”, the soul of the sound he wants to express on his instrument. On the other hand, these are central and “centerpieces” of the 18th century repertoire. As the “queen of instruments”, the trumpet has long been considered the “instrument of kings”: the shine of worldly power was perfectly reflected in the brilliance of its sound. Especially in the stylistic features of the early classic, it also proves itself – and on this Andre Schoch attaches special importance to this recording – as an instrument of sensitivity, as an instrument of soul tones. In retrospect, the 18th and the beginning 19th century appears as the heyday of the trumpet concert, with which the temporary farewell to the genre takes place. It is precisely this heyday that Andre Schoch and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra revive on “Core”, with works that have not found an entrance to the general concert operation (apart from Telemann). This definitely applies to Johann Wilhelm Hertel and Johann Melchior Molter, but also Leopold Mozart, the father, and Michael Haydn, the brother of the much more famous Joseph Haydn. And even Telemann could not assert himself in the perception of the classical or baroque community for a long time, despite his notoriety in the society of Bach and Handel. This is also because these composers combined baroque and classical style elements in their writing. The concerts presented here were still written for the Baroque trumpet. On it, as on all brass instruments of the time, only the natural tone series can be produced. The clean playing of high tones was only possible for specialists and also associated with the greatest difficulties for them. This led to the fact that the works presented here were temporarily forgotten: with the enforcement of new trumpets, the virtuosos who had shone on the old disappeared; and with them also the pieces written for them disappeared. The piccolo trumpets, established in the first quarter of the 20th century and also used in this recording, were also designed to make this lost repertoire accessible again.
